I volunteered as an editor and a writer on the Content Committee where I worked on a variety of documents, blog posts, news/press releases, bout recaps, skater stories, interviews, current events and e-blasts. I also conducted presentations on the sport of roller derby to libraries and other institutions. Among these and other tasks, I skated for the WCR on the Hell's Belles home team and the Third Coast travel team.
The CEL provides experiences and opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities. I worked as an Activities Instructor, managing all aspects of the classroom including engaging and imaginative lesson plans, thematic units and detailed progress reports for each member. I taught Art, Gym, History, Drama, Cooking and more, accommodating for various social, mental and physical abilities. I had the opportunity to develop trust and friendships with parents and caretakers as well as my colleagues. I trained and mentored volunteers and facilitated a plethora of social, recreational and independent living skills programs, adhering to the mission of the CEL.
I spent one year at this federal national service program (domestic Peace Corps) that deploys teams throughout the country to perform community service projects in the fields of education, environment, unmet human needs and public safety. I received training and certification-Disaster Relief, CPR, Mass Care Overview and First Aid. I fulfilled objectives that required leadership, aptitude and sensitivity-tornado and flood relief, park restoration, teacher’s aid in Kindergarten and Fifth grade classes for underprivileged students, support for homeless adults and youth, assistance in a retirement home and much more.
